What about the gemara that says that while Beis Shammai said one must always tell the truth, Beis Hillel said that sometimes a lie that prevents pain is acceptable?

Garnel – according to many, that would no longer be considered a lie. According to Rav Dessler (M.M. vol. 1), the criteria for truth and falsehood can be determined by its effect; anything that can bring people closer to each other and to God is Truth – anything that causes a break, a “pirud”, even if it is accurate in every sense of the word is considered Falsehood. This explanation is congruent with that Gemara.

I’ll clarify the catalyst that sparked this post.

We had an issue recently with one of kids and lying.

In explaining the importance of emes, I mentioned that, “With Emes and Sheker there is no in-between.”

As my wife said if you are in the water, you are wet. You can’t be “a little” wet. Either you are or you’re not.

Sure you can. Maybe you’re standing just up to your ankles in the water so most of you is dry and only your feet are wet. There are always degrees of things like that
