Rabbi Yisrael Lipkin of Salant
In Koenigsberg, after R’ Yisrael had ascertained that he could not influence the storekeepers to close their stores on Shabbos, he made up with them that at least they would not bring their keys from the house to the store on Shabbos; but would hide the keys close to the store instead.

Hey ya gotta start somewhere.
I think R’ yisroel Salant in Yerushalyim made em promise not to write on shabbos, and then not to open during lecht benching time, and dont have the helper come in and dont buy new stuff an shabbos ……
1 atta time of course!
Yingerman,
I’ve heard similar stories about Reb Aryeh Levine, as well. Thanks for reading and the comment.
I believe that the approach towards kiruv is lacking today. Most “kiruv professional” are more interested in notches in their kiruv belts and prefer that their “projects” take the whole jump…this subject really should be an entire post unto itself.
